    Privacy Policy

    Last updated · 10 October 2026 · Version 2026-10.1

Yarnily is used by children, and almost everything here is about a child who did not choose to be here. So this policy is written to be read, not filed: what we know, where it goes, and how you stop it. If a sentence is unclear, that is our fault. Write to us and we will fix the sentence.

    For parents

    The short version.

Five things, in plain words. Everything below says the same things again, more carefully.
    • What we know: your child's first name, their birth month and year, one photo if you upload it, and the notes you write about them.
    • What we never collect: where you live, your child's school, health information, their voice, or anything they say aloud.
    • Where it goes: to the providers who help write, draw, narrate and safety-check a story, the minimum each one needs. We never sell it and never share it for advertising.
    • Your controls: see everything, correct it, export it, pause it, or delete it, from the app, without asking us.
    • Reaching us: write to support@yarnily.com, one address for everything, and a person answers.

    What we collect, and why

    About your child

    • Their first name. It appears in their stories, which is the point of them.
    • Their birth month and year. Not the day. A story written for a four-year-old should not read like one written for a nine-year-old, and the month is enough to get that right. We deliberately do not ask for a full date of birth.
    • One photo, if you choose to upload it. It is used to draw your child as a character. It is optional. Yarnily works without it.
    • The notes you write about them. These are kept as separate items rather than one paragraph: what to lean into, what you'd like Yarnily to gently work on, what to avoid, and the small true details (a pet's name, a bedtime routine). Each one can be paused or deleted on its own, so switching off "afraid of thunderstorms" when she grows out of it doesn't mean retyping everything else.
    • What their stories explored, and what they read. Where the learning journey is switched on, Yarnily keeps a short note of what each story taught, and reflects it back to you. On a device you link, it also records which of their own books your child reads, how far and for how long, and the activities they finish after a book, so they earn stars and trophies and you can follow along on their profile. Whether an answer in an activity was right never leaves the device. This is covered by a single consent you can switch off at any time, per child.

    About you

    • Your phone number. It is how you sign in.
    • Your email address, only if you write to support and give us one so we can reply. Yarnily does not ask for an address anywhere else, and you do not need one to use it or to pay for it.
    • Your plan and payment records: which plan you are on and what has been charged. Card details never reach Yarnily.
    • How the parent screens are used: which pages are opened and where people get stuck, so we can improve them. This is tied to your account, not your child's, and never collected from the screens children read on, in the app or on a device you have linked for them. kids.yarnily.com runs no analytics at all.

About a device you link for your child

    • Its name and a short description. The name you give it, and a short description of its browser, such as "Chrome on Android", so you can tell your devices apart. Not its full browser details, and not its internet address.
    • When it was linked and last used, to within about a quarter of an hour, so a device nobody uses stops working and is removed.
    • Which of your children it shows.
    • Its pass. The device keeps a pass in its own browser storage. We keep only a scrambled form of it that cannot be turned back into the pass.

A linked device is sent the first names and drawn avatars of the children you chose, and the books you have published for them as they appear in the app, with their pictures, their narration and your name as the author, and Yarnily's library for a child you switch it on for. It is never sent their photo, your notes about them, their learning journey or anything about your plan. With the learning journey on, it records the books of their own your child reads there and the activities they finish, as described above. Books from Yarnily's library are never recorded, and with the learning journey off nothing is.

    2

    What the stories remember

Where story continuity is offered: Yarnily keeps a record of your child's fictional story world (the characters, places and story events from the stories we've made together) so that future stories can continue and remember. This is a record of make-believe, not of your child's life. You can see everything the story world remembers, and pause, correct or delete any of it, at any time, from your world page. Deleting a memory removes it from all future stories. This feature is covered by the same consent as the learning journey and switches off with it.

Today, what Yarnily keeps under that consent is the short note of what each story explored, which is what the learning journey reflects back to you. You can read all of it in your data export, switch it off per child, and it is deleted with the story or the child.

    Continuing a story

A question your child asks about the story, which you choose to pass on, may be used as the seed for the next story. We store the story idea: never a recording, and never a transcript of anything your child says.

A story at a set time

If you set a story time, we prepare a story for that moment. You can change or remove the schedule at any time. Permission to send you a notification is a separate, optional choice you make on your device, and Yarnily works without it.

    3

    What we never collect

Some of these we could plausibly use. We don't ask for them anyway, because a children's product should hold as little as it can get away with.

    • Your location, or your child's.
    • Your child's school, class or teacher.
    • Health, medical or diagnostic information.
    • Behavioural profiles: Yarnily does not rate, rank, grade or assess your child, and does not build a profile to target them with anything.
    • Contact details for your child. Children do not have their own account, an email address or a phone number in Yarnily.
    • A full date of birth. Yarnily asks for the month and the year, and nothing finer.
    • Voice recordings of your child.
    • Transcripts of anything your child says. Yarnily does not listen.

Yarnily shows no advertising to children and no third-party advertising trackers run in the children's screens.

    4

    Who else sees it

We do not sell your family's information, and we never share it for advertising. Making a story does mean sending parts of it to specialist providers, and it would be dishonest to imply otherwise:

    • Content-generation providers (computer models) help write, illustrate, narrate and safety-check stories. The story text reaches them, and it contains your child's first name. If you uploaded a photo, it reaches the providers who draw your child.
    • Service providers handle hosting, storage, sign-in, analytics and error reporting.
    • Payment providers handle purchases. Card details go to them, never to us.

What we can tell you for certain is what we do:

    • Each provider receives only the minimum its task needs, and only for as long as the task takes.
    • We do not sell your family's information, to anyone, ever.
    • We never share it for advertising, and no advertising is shown to children.
    • We do not use your family's data to train models of our own.

What each of those providers does with what it receives is a question about their contracts, and we would rather answer it slowly than confidently. Every provider is engaged under a written contract with us, which is what the law requires before any of your family's data reaches them, and each also has its own data-protection terms. We are working through those terms and will say what they commit to once we have read them, rather than summarise them before we have checked them.

We publish the itemised version of this — for every job done on our behalf, exactly which of your family's data it receives — and we keep it current. See what leaves Yarnily.

We may also disclose information where the law requires it (a valid court order or legal process) or where it is necessary to protect a child from harm. We will tell you when we are permitted to.

    5

Your rights, and how to use them

Under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 you hold these rights as your child's parent or guardian. All of them work from inside the app: none of them require our permission.

    See everything

Your child's profile page shows the notes Yarnily holds about them, item by item. Where a world page is offered, it shows everything the story world remembers. And data export, in your account settings, returns a complete machine-readable file of everything we hold: your account, each child's profile, the notes, the consent records, what their stories explored, the stories themselves, the books they read and the activities they did, the devices you have linked for your children, and your subscription and payment history.

    Correct it

Edit your child's name, age, photo and notes at any time. A note can be paused rather than deleted, if it is true for now but not forever.

    Delete it

Deleting your account is a real deletion, not a flag. Your account, your children's profiles, their stories, their photos, avatars and illustrations, your chats and your plan and billing details are removed from our database, and the stored files are purged from cloud storage. Every device you linked for your children is unlinked and its record deleted. Your sign-in account is deleted, and your analytics profile is deleted with it. The payment records the law makes us keep are the one exception: section 6 says what they hold.

Deleting a single child removes their photo, their avatar, the reference picture drawn from it, and every illustration of them. Their stories are erased (the title and the story text are wiped, not merely hidden), any share link is revoked, and they are taken off every device you have linked, so nothing carrying their name or likeness outlives them. What Yarnily had learned about them goes too, with the record of what they read and the activities they did.

One more thing is kept on purpose: the record that you consented, and when, and to which version of this policy. It contains no information about your child and it is the only proof that consent was properly taken. We are required to be able to show it.

    Take it with you

Data export is complete and free. It is not a paid feature and it never will be.

    Withdraw consent

The learning journey switch on your child's profile turns off everything Yarnily records about what their stories explore, including, where offered, the story world. Off means nothing further is recorded, on a device you link too. You can delete what was recorded before as well.

    Complain

Write to Pradheesh Hari, our Grievance Officer, at support@yarnily.com. It is the same address for everything else, and a person reads it rather than a ticket queue: every complaint gets a reply within 5 business days. If you are not satisfied with how we handle your complaint, you may complain to the Data Protection Board of India.

    6

    How long we keep things

    • While your account is open, we keep your family's stories and profiles so they are there when you come back. Nothing expires on you.
    • When you delete a child, their photos and illustrations are removed from storage and their story content is erased at the moment you ask. It is not queued for later.
    • When you delete your account, the same applies to everything in it, immediately.
    • A device you link for your child is kept until you remove it in Kids devices or delete your account, and then its record is deleted at once. A device nobody uses for 90 days stops working, and its record is deleted soon after.
    • Analytics about how the parent screens are used are kept for 12 months.
    • Payment and tax records are kept for ten years from the date of the payment, as Indian financial and tax law and our payment provider's terms require, even after an account is deleted. What is kept is the record of the payment: the amount, the date, the plan and the payment provider's reference numbers. Your name, phone number and children are not part of it, and no card, UPI or bank details ever were. This is the one category we cannot delete on request.
    • Consent records are kept for as long as we may need to show that consent was properly taken. They contain nothing about your child.

We are building an automatic sweep that purges what is left of closed accounts on a fixed schedule. Until it runs, a deletion you ask for is carried out at the time you ask: the sweep is a backstop for anything a deletion misses, not the thing that performs it.

The analytics mentioned above, and the one other cookie this site sets, are covered on their own page, with what each is called, what it does, how long it lasts, and how to say no, in the Cookie Policy. kids.yarnily.com, where a child reads on a device you have linked, sets no cookies.

    7

    Consent, and who gives it

Only an adult can open a Yarnily account, and only a parent or guardian can add a child. Before a child's details are stored, we ask you to confirm that you are their parent or guardian and that you agree to how their information will be used: a verifiable parental consent, as the DPDP Act requires. We record that you gave it, when, and against which version of this policy.

If we change what you are agreeing to in any material way, we ask again rather than assuming the old answer still holds. The in-app consent currently in force is version 2026-10-v8.

Yarnily is built for India and this policy is written to the DPDP Act 2023. Where families use Yarnily from elsewhere, we also honour the United States' COPPA and, in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, the GDPR's rules for children, including your rights of access, correction, erasure, portability and objection, and your right to complain to your local supervisory authority.

    8

    Keeping it safe

Your family's information travels encrypted and is stored encrypted. A child's photo and the reference picture drawn from it are held in private storage and reached only through Yarnily's own access-checked routes: never from a public link, and never by another family. Story pictures become readable by someone holding a share link only when you create one, and stop being readable when you revoke it. A device you have linked can read the pictures and narration of the books it shows, until you remove it. Access by our team is limited to the people who need it to run the service.

No service can promise it will never be breached. If your family's data is involved in one, we will tell you and the Data Protection Board of India, as the law requires.

    9

    Where your data is held

Yarnily runs on cloud infrastructure in India, and that is where your family's account, stories and pictures are stored. Analytics about how the parent screens are used are held in the European Union.

Some of the providers who help make a story process it in other countries, including the United States. Where that happens it is covered by the data-protection terms we hold them to, and the rules in this policy apply to your family's data wherever it sits.

    10

    Changes to this policy

When this policy changes materially we will tell you in the app, with the date the change takes effect. If the change alters what you consented to on your child's behalf, we ask for consent again rather than treating your silence as agreement.

    11

    Reaching us

One address, for everything: a data question, a billing problem, a story that reached your child and shouldn't have. We would rather run one inbox a person actually opens than three that route into silence.
